Technical Specialist: Home Energy Management/Controls/Software | ICF International | Washington, DC

The Energy Efficiency group is a leader in designing and implementing effective and innovative demand side management strategies, including energy efficiency, demand response, and peak load management. Our thorough understanding of our clients' needs enables us to help energy companies, governments, and commercial clients worldwide to manage energy consumption and peak demand.

To support our growth, we seek a Technical Specialist that will support federal and state energy efficiency programs by researching, analyzing, and proposing technical requirements for a variety of energy efficient technologies. The selected candidate will coordinate with industry stakeholders, including manufacturers, utilities, trade associations, retailers, and energy efficiency advocates. Specifically, the candidate will serve as a technical expert on the development of technical specifications and energy efficiency programs for programmable thermostats, smart meters, and other home energy management systems. Tasks will include test procedure review and development, analysis of product performance data and other design requirements, assistance in the development of technical requirements, attendance at industry meetings, and review of stakeholder feedback.

The successful candidate will have technical experience in one or more of the following areas:
  • Automated building controls
  • Smart Grid solutions
  • Home energy monitoring
  • Home energy management devices
  • Energy management software design
  • Zoning systems
  • Programmable thermostats
  • Home network communications

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
What job skills should you have? You should have the unique combination of interpersonal and analytical skill that will make you a critical member of our team from the day you arrive. Specifically, you should be able to demonstrate the following: *A minimum of a Bachelors degree (Mechanical/Electrical engineering, or related field) and at least 5 years of experience in the home energy management field *Excellent research, technical analysis, and technical writing skills. *Ability to review and/or develop test procedures. *Familiarity with existing industry test procedures. *Knowledge of comfort product and/or software design, installation, and operation. *Solid written and oral communication skills.

What additional skills would we like to see? *Experience writing technical standards on energy efficient products. *Technical understanding of other Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) products, in addition to programmable thermostats. *Utility program knowledge/experience. *Knowledge of HVAC market channels (i.e., distribution and retail channel intelligence) and HVAC industry contacts. *Product knowledge for US and Canadian markets useful.
